Individuals interested in applying to work as a substitute teacher must complete the professional application for teaching & administrative positions.  All substitutes will be required to attend substitute training; date TBD.  All substitute employees must submit to a criminal record and child abuse and neglect background check before they will be approved to substitute for Salem City Schools.  Substitute employees shall pay for the fingerprinting, criminal record check and abuse and neglect check.  New applicants will be notified by phone to make an appointment for background checks with Dana Crouse, Administrative Secretary.

To be eligible to substitute, a person must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.

In addition, substitute teachers shall submit:

• An application for employment,
• One letter of recommendation,
• A satisfactory tuberculosis risk assessment,
• Transcripts verifying degree conferred.

A substitute teacher is (i) one who is employed to substitute for a contracted teacher for a temporary period of time during the contracted teacher's absence, or (ii) one who is employed to fill a teacher vacancy for a period of time, but for no longer than 90 teaching days in such vacancy, unless otherwise approved by the Superintendent of Public Instruction on a case-by-case basis, during one school year.
