Description

Salem City Schools is searching for qualified applicants for the position of Car/Van Driver for the 2024-2025 school year.

 

CAR AND/OR VAN DRIVER

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs intermediate semi skilled human support work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events; picks up and drops off students per schedule; maintains order and security in the vehicle; obeys all laws and regulations; ensures that the vehicle is in good operating condition at all times; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Coordinator of Transportation and appropriate principals.  This is a non-exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

 

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.  The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Driving car and/or van; picking up and delivering students to/from school.  Car and/or van drivers also…

  • Performs inspection of vehicles; reports operating and equipment deficiencies and makes the car/van available for scheduled maintenance;
  • May clean car/van inside and out including but not limited to cleaning a windshield before a trip;
  • Fuels car/van as required;
  • Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for car/van operations;
  • Transports only authorized students, school personnel and/or authorized chaperones to special special events and field trips;
  • Reports all accidents and completes required reports and in the event of an accident or emergency, assures the safe evacuation of children and adults passengers;
  • Reviews emergency procedures with the Coordinator of Transportation annually or as needed;
  • Records mileage; maintains various records and prepares a variety of reports on activities;
  • Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on car/van; makes reports as necessary;
  • Works independently or collaboratively with others in a wide variety of circumstances;
  • Establishes professional relationships and communicates effectively;
  • Exercises sound judgment in decision making;
  • Demonstrates teamwork, flexibility, and ability to adapt to new ideas and situations; 
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of children by only releasing students into the custody of those individuals authorized to receive them;
  • Follows and ensures mandated child restraint device procedures, ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained;
  • Assures that no child is ever left unsupervised in a car/van;
  • Attends all scheduled staff meetings, team meetings, and training, as requested;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the problems involved in operating a car/van; general knowledge of the geography of the City and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a vehicle; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, public, associates and students.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must maintain a satisfactory driving record from the Division of Motor Vehicles that meets state requirements and indicates positive driving points.
