Salem City Schools is seeking qualified applicants to serve as the Girls Tennis Coach for the 2024-2025 school year.   

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

 

Develops and maintains a high-quality athletics program in the sport served which emphasizes correct and proper techniques, sportsmanship, safety, and healthy competitive attitudes and which affords positive interscholastic athletics experiences to the participating athletes.  In carrying out these duties, the athletic head coach will demonstrate a high degree of ethics, professionalism, human relations and be a positive role model for all students.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Principal and Athletic Director. Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule, which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities.  The contracted salary covers all hours worked.

 

 

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

 

Develops and maintains a high-quality athletics program in the sport served which emphasizes correct and proper techniques, sportsmanship, safety, and healthy competitive attitudes and which affords positive interscholastic athletics experiences to the participating athletes.  The Athletic Head Coach also:

 

  • Selects, teaches, trains, and supervises student athletes for team membership and participation;
  • Communicates openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff, and administration as a positive representative of the SalemCitySchool division;
  • Is knowledgeable of applicable School Board policies and regulations, communicates openly with, and accepts direction from the Athletic Director on activities involving policy;
  • Teaches proper, correct, and appropriate sports techniques, playing rules, strategies, and play tactics;
  • Designs and implements a comprehensive conditioning program which adequately and safely prepares student athletes for competitive play, including particular emphasis on endurance, strength, and agility;
  • Creates and maintains a reasonable practice schedule within the parameters of the school day and year and the schedule of contests developed by the Athletic Director;
  • Conducts and supervises practice, contest, and travel events with particular emphasis on student safety;
  • Establishes supervisory systems for locker rooms, practice fields and/or courts, and buses and monitors these systems’ implementation;
  • Teaches sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic, and responsibility to student athletes;
  • In cooperation with the Athletic Director, develops standards of conduct, scholarship, attendance, and leadership applicable to all student athlete participants on and off the field or court;
  • Monitors student athletes’ school attendance, grades, and personal conduct; takes appropriate action when student performance in any of these or related areas shows signs of falling below acceptable standards;
  • Designs, implements, and monitors specific job performance assignments for assistant coach(es);
  • Assumes responsibility for equipment, uniform, and playing field/court management system (including current inventory accounting);
  • Works directly the Salem Sports Foundation and with relevant parents’ organizations to develop and maintain effective support systems and programs for team and sport support;
  • Maintains effective and timely communications with athletes, parents, the school administration, and the community-at-large concerning team and sport;
  • Establishes and maintains strong positive public relations in the school and community;
  • Models good sportsmanship and enforces sportsmanlike attitudes among athletes at all times;
  • Cooperates fully with school administration and support service personnel;
  • Develops and maintains a budget for team needs and resources;
  • Intercedes on behalf of participating student athletes with college and/or professional sports teams’ representatives;
  • Attends clinics, workshops, and professional organizational events and activities;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Athletic Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, and techniques used in coaching; knowledge of VHSL bylaws, rules, and regulations; a high degree of oral and written communication skills; outstanding leadership and personal characteristics; a high degree of  ability to motivate others; a high degree of stamina must be exhibited from past experiences as well as the ability to work with and through others.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a graduation from an accredited college or university and considerable experience in playing and/or coaching the sport being coached; licensed teacher preferred; non-licensed personnel may be used when licensed personnel are not available or with special approval of the Superintendent; demonstrated ability to work with others.
