Salem City Schools is searching for qualified applicants for a School Psychologist for the 2025-2026 school year.

 

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST – 2.40

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs difficult professional work in making diagnostic evaluations of individual pupils to determine disabilities including an assessment and interpretation of the student's intellectual, social, and emotional development; serves as a consultant to school personnel and parents in interpreting problems; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services.  This is an exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule, which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities.  The contracted salary covers all hours worked.

 

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Performing diagnostic evaluation of students, assessing and interpreting intellectual, social and/or emotional development; conducting consultations; preparing and maintaining files and records.  The School Psychologist also…..

  • Screens referrals by previewing referrals assigned, schedules evaluations, secures records from community agencies, and observes the student;
  • Completes individual psychological evaluations including intelligence, achievement, perceptual and projective personality updating and provides individual and/or group counseling to students when appropriate;
  • Obtains any ancillary evaluations; e.g., hearing, visual, speech, educational and medical;
  • Completes a written report to be sent to the schools and other agencies, including an interpretation of the results of the psychological evaluation;
  • Conducts parent/school conferences, including recommendations for the child's school program and/or home environment and conducts in-service programs as needed;
  • Assists with the collection, analysis, and reporting of division-wide test data;
  • Assists with revision of forms utilized by the Office of Student Services
  • Evaluates personnel as designated by the Director of Student Services;
  • Assists special education staff with the use of instructional technology utilized in the instructional process;
  • Coordinates and conducts teacher training in the area of IEP development;
  • Attends school board meetings and assists with presentations as needed;
  • Acts as liaison with community agencies;
  • Serves as chairperson of special education eligibility committee in assigned schools;
  • Serves as a member of the child study committee in assigned schools;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the special education process for diagnostic and evaluative procedures; thorough knowledge of federal and state mandate and local procedures and regulations relating to special education program; excellent oral and written communications skills; skill in the use of computer equipment; ability to work with and through other school personnel, parents and community agencies.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Postgraduate Professional Certificate with an endorsement in School Psychology and some experience in school psychology.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
