ATHLETIC TRAINER

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

 

Performs difficult professional work providing services in the specialized area of athletic training, responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and medical conditions; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the school principal.  This is an exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule, which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities.  The contracted salary covers all hours worked.

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

 

Establishing a flexible athletic training program and environment.  The Athletic Trainer also…

  • Develops and implements injury prevention programs;
  • Monitors athletes for signs of injury, illness or overtraining;
  • Assesses athletic injuries and medical conditions;
  • Provides immediate care for acute injuries and emergencies and refers athletes to appropriate healthcare providers when necessary;
  • Records and maintains medical records of all treatments, injuries, and concussions;
  • Assists with pre-concussion testing for athletes and health and safety protocols;
  • Communicates with all head coaches the services of the athletic training department;
  • Maintains emergency action plans and safety protocols;
  • Determines readiness for return to play in coordination with physicians;
  • Educates athletes on injury management and recovery techniques;
  • Maintains and supervises the training rooms;
  • Ensures compliances with state regulations, school division policies, and professional standards;
  • Protects confidentiality of medical information under FERPA;
  • Assists with scheduling coverage for practices and games;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

Thorough knowledge of athletic training; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field.  Current certification from the Virginia Board of Medicine.  Previous experience preferred.
