MIDDLE SCHOOL BOOKKEEPER
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs difficult skilled clerical and technical work involving the preparation and maintenance of fiscal or related records in a middle school; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal. This is a non-exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Preparing and maintaining financial systems and records; receiving, receipting, recording, disbursing, depositing and accounting for school funds. The Middle School Bookkeeper also…..
- Collects, receipts and accounts for money received from students, teachers, staff and the general public;
- Posts entries to appropriate ledger; prepares bank deposit and deposits money received;
- Performs a variety of office assistant tasks as required;
- Receipts all money turned in by staff for fees, fund raisers, athletic events, supplies, equipment and uniforms;
- Maintains accurate records of school purchase orders;
- Issues checks to vendors and school officials;
- Helps maintain fund accounts, makes trial balances;
- Prepares bills for payment; verifies coding;
- Helps prepare a wide variety of accounting, fiscal, statistical and similar reports;
- Posts receipts and disbursements to proper accounts and prepares reports of money received;
- Prepares financial reports; maintains internal audit and prepares for and assists with outside audits;
- Performs secretarial duties as required;
- Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of bookkeeping terminology and methods; general knowledge of accounting theory, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of accounting transactions; thorough knowledge of standard office methods, practices and equipment; skill in the use of computer equipment; ability to maintain complex financial records and to prepare financial reports accurately; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, parents and the general public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by courses in bookkeeping, accounting, business and similar subjects and considerable general office experience involving the maintenance of financial records.
