SCHOOL NURSE
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs intermediate professional work ensuring the health of students in schools; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Director of Student Services. This is an exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule, which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities. The contracted salary covers all hours worked.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, standing, walking, and fingering; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Providing school health services and physical screening to students; preparing and maintaining student records. The School Health Nurse also……
- Performs health services for students in school system;
- Performs nursing assessment of each student referred for health related concerns;
- Makes observations and assesses condition; develops and implements health care plan for each student assessed;
- After observation and assessment, counsels with student, parents and/or teachers about problems observed;
- Dispenses medications and administers first-aid;
- Screens and tests students for hearing and vision problems, height and weight;
- Refers students for medical care as needed;
- Observes students for communicable diseases;
- Performs specialized procedures;
- Keeps logs of visits and care given;
- Provides instruction on nutrition, hygiene, grooming, weight control, first aid, disease prevention, substance abuse and related health concerns;
- Coordinates and monitors work of unlicensed personnel who dispense medications and conduct medical procedures;
- Assists with the coordination of the physiological assessment for special education referrals;
- Ensures compliance with state school health requirements including immunizations;
- Provides health counseling to students and parents;
- Provides health educational materials and information and teaches health related classes;
- Assists with in-service training to ensure compliance with OSHA bloodborne pathogens standards;
- Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the common medical practices, procedures and techniques associated with a standard physical examination; thorough knowledge of the preliminary diagnosis of medical problems and the administration of medications related to treatment and first aid; ability to administer medications and apply therapeutic treatments as required; ability to follow technical oral and written instructions in exact detail; ability to perform student health assessments and maintain accurate records.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited school of nursing with some experience in community health or pediatric nursing. BSN preferred
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid appropriate license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Certified in Adult CPR.
