LIBRARIAN/MEDIA SPECIALIST

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs difficult professional work instructing students in library and technology skills, operating a school library/media center and serving as a resource for instructional personnel and students; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Principal and the Director of Instruction and Innovation.  Supervision is exercised over media aides, personalized learning lab facilitator and student workers. This is an exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule, which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities.  The contracted salary covers all hours worked.

 

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of professional library, principles, materials and practices; thorough knowledge of prescribed school system policies and procedures; ability to evaluate library and technology programs and services and to develop improved methods; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in library science or completion of a library science program.  Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
